Periodontal (gum) disease is inflammation of the gums that are red, swollen and bleeding. Stages of disease are early, moderate and severe, which can range with potential bone loss. We are very careful with signs of gum disease at DeMercy Dental, and we ask that you come and see our dentists right away if you are suffering from the symptoms.
We do our absolute best to diagnose, treat and maintain gum disease at an early stage. If you keep up with your recommended exams and cleanings, we will be able to treat the disease with the proper techniques to achieve stable gum health. We treat periodontal disease with scaling and root planning procedures as a part of our therapy program. This process involves the administration of anesthesia so the working area is comfortable. Our hygienist can then properly remove the tartar (calculus) and plaque by creating a smooth surface. In more severe cases, we also offer surgical treatments with the use laser technology, which does not include flap surgery, bone grafts or tissue grafts.
If you suffer from the following symptoms, there is a high chance that you have gum disease, and we suggest that you come in and see us as soon as you can:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Excessive bleeding while you brush your teeth
- Gums that are receding and pulling away from your teeth
- Loose teeth
- Pus between your gums and teeth
- Sores in your mouth
- Persistent bad breath
