Plaque: What You Should Know

Posted .

As you probably know, it’s important to brush and floss your teeth. Similarly, you know that you should visit your dentist every six months. But do you know why doing these things are so important?

Honestly, there are several benefits to brushing your teeth, but removing plaque is a very important one. You see, after you eat, food particles are left behind, which allow plaque to grow. Plaque, a slimy, sticky substance that sticks to your teeth, can eventually lead to tooth decay. Sadly, if plaque isn’t cleaned from your smile, it could harden into tartar. This can be especially problematic because tartar can only be removed by a dentist. If plaque or tartar are left on your teeth, it could irritate your gums (leading to gum disease) or cause tooth decay.

Fortunately, plaque formations are fairly easy to prevent. For instance, you can prevent these problems by brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day and flossing daily. Similarly, when you snack, try healthy foods such as carrots, apples, or celery. However, while there are a few things you can do at home on your own, we strongly recommend visiting us if you are interested in learning more. Dr. DeMercy and Dr. Kossick can give you specific advice and help you identify areas that you may not clean as well as you could. We will also remove any tartar on your smile.
